This cookbook will make you the alchemist in your kitchen

Do you wish you could eat bread and pastry like the Croatians do? Every day, at every meal but without compromising your waistline? So, what is our secret?

We simply love bread and other bite-sized snacks such as kiflice. And they love us back.

This sounds like a joke but it’s not. If you had a grandma who baked pastries on a Sunday morning or for birthday parties, you remember that feeling.

Her dough was never just dough.

Whatever substance gave those baked goods shape and bounce also pulled the whole family together.

Home bakers such as your baka or mama gave their dough a magic ingredient: love. Their baked goods were designed to give us a sense of home. The house smelled warm and fuzzy and we felt comforted and connected. Imagine being able to bake this kind of heavenly pastry?

No one in your family will ever go to a bakery again. Instead, they’ll hover around in the kitchen until that crunchy, succulent burek comes out of the oven.

My Croatian Savoury Baking cookbook will teach you how to be that wizard home baker.

First, you’ll get CLEAR-CUT recipes because baking is a combination of precision and passion. No more fluff such as ‘a pinch of this, or a handful of that’.

I measure the ingredients with such accuracy that you’ll think you’re in a lab. All this so each recipe will turn out great from the first go.

The abundance of photos guide you along, especially when a pastry requires complex shaping.

Some baking techniques are tricky - think home stretched phyllo dough. But, my step-by-step recipes are laid out in such a way that anyone can follow along.

Just peek at the example images below and see for yourself. I love demystifying everything that sounds difficult.

Once you master your favorite recipes, your kitchen will become your home bakery.

And you'll turn into an alchemist who makes the dough but in fact bakes little crumbs of love.

How the cookbook is organised

CROATIAN SAVOURY BAKING cookbook is divided into 5 chapters, bringing you all kinds of baked goods that you can find in a typical Croatian bakery. There are no sweets and desserts in this cookbook because you already have those recipes in the Croatian Desserts cookbook.

  1. 1
BREAD. These recipes brings you traditional, rustic loaves that have always been the staple in Croatian households. From our famous bread under the peka bell (but baked in the oven), old-fashioned cornbread to intricately designed Easter braided bread.
  2. 2
BUREK. This entire chapter is dedicated to the homemade phyllo pastry: from various kinds of burek filled with meat, cheese, spinach and potatoes, to our iconic štrukli and bučnica (savoury pumpkin strudel).
  3. 3
PIES. The celebration of pogača (Croatian flatbread) that can be extremely simple but also filled with various ingredients such as Swiss chard, walnuts, anchovies and cottage cheese and cream. Star recipes include anchovy pie from the island of Vis and soparnik.
  4. 4
PASTRIES. From braided buns topped with sesame and poppy seeds, to soft and salty finger rolls (slanci), this chapter will make you dizzy with breakfast options. Included are some recipes that are today protected cultural heritage, such as finger rolls from Varaždin.
  5. 5
SNACKS. This chapter will make you the queen of the party. You will wow your guests with various puffs (cheese, potato, port scratchings), wine twists, crackers, and our signature kiflice filled with just about anything.
